Great Leaders Do This, Do You?

"Great leaders focus on only one thing: creating and communicating a compelling, inspiring vision." Michael Masterson

So how do you do this one thing, as Michael Masterson states, with your team? By making your business seem worthwhile - showing others that what you do is important, valuable and has meaning. But doing so first requires personally believing these things about your business.

What is it about your business that makes it worthwhile and important to you? Is it the products, helping others improve their lives, the value received, the personal growth opportunity, being your own boss, the financial rewards, the relationships formed, the support given, or some combination? Have you clearly identified what is compelling to you so that you can communicate it to your team?

Ask yourself - "Why am I in this business; how do my products and services help my customers?" Make a list of all the points you love about your business and what it does for others. Then take your list and put it in one inspiring sentence. Here's an example: "Contributing positively to the lives of others is important to me and _____________ allows me to do so in two unique ways: ___________ and ________."

Once you have your compelling reason for being in the business, convey it to your team in some form or other with every communication you make. Ask yourself frequently - "Do I impart to my team the feeling that what I am doing is worthwhile?" Keep in mind that each team member's reason being in the business may be different from yours. Help your team identify and voice their own compelling visions. Then work with them to set goals that are tied to their vision. Remember, individuals are much happier and more fulfilled when working on a worthwhile goal!
