Team Leader - Extending Your Best

To be an effect team leader, you have to build strong relationships. And sometimes that's not easy - especially with individuals that may not think about the business the same way you do. Even if someone doesn't like your approach to building a business, as a leader it is important that others, at least, have a positive impression of how you conduct yourself. To do this means you must learn how to relate to everyone constructively - even the ones with whom you may not agree. You can make a difference in how you are viewed by your team and others by slight changes in your behavior.

Nicholas Boothman, author of How to Make People Like You in 90 Seconds Or Less, states that what you do in the first 90 seconds of each personal encounter determines how the person will respond to you later on. Every time you encounter a team member, mentor or fellow leader, do the following:

  1. Immediately put yourself in a positive frame of mind by saying silently to yourself: "I am a positive person and that's how I present myself to others."
  2. Make eye contact so that the other person knows you are genuinely interested in them.
  3. Be the first to smile and extend a hand.
  4. Greet them in a friendly, sincere manner and speak their name.
  5. Practice your listening skills and encourage them to open up.
  6. Strive to make an emotional connection with them; you'll find it easier to be persuasive with someone if they think you understand their position.
  7. Show interest in what they have to say; make them feel important.
  8. Think caring thoughts about the other person throughout the conversation and end on an upbeat note. Let them leave feeling better about themselves!

Now these points may seem pretty basic to you but how often do you actually practice these steps? Of all the points above, the most important conversation opening step is smiling! That's because smiling is contagious; when you smile the other person almost always smiles back. When you smile you instantly feel better and stronger. A smile from you will insure that the other person is more open. Try this with the next person you encounter today and all the rest of the month and see what happens! Isn't December the perfect month to start?

Be a strong relationship builder and watch your business grow!
