Dear Direct Selling Leader; In a recent coaching call, one of my clients said to me: “Can we talk about a particularly difficult situation I am facing?” My answer was – “Yes, certainly, this is your time to use in any way you want.” My client (Kay – not her real name) proceeded to tell me about a person on her team who was not performing well and didn’t seem receptive to any guidance from her. Kay said they were not ‘connecting’ and that she was really at a loss on how to turn the situation around. She felt deficient in her leadership skills while at the same time frustrated over the lack of response from this individual. After listening to Kay share some more details, I asked her to tell me about this team member, what motivated her and her personal goals. Kay became very quiet and thoughtful for a minute and finally said: “I can’t honestly say that I know what motivates her or what her goals are. I guess I just assumed she has some of the same business goals I have.” My next question to Kay was: “And, do you think it would it be helpful to know what motivates her?” Kay responded with: “Absolutely! I can see where if I knew what her personal goals were and what motivated her, I would know better how to lead her forward toward those goals. I guess I just never thought of it that way!” Kay and I then went on to talk about what she could do next to get this relationship on track again.
